Who we are.

Bronzeville Food Co-op is a group of community members and local nonprofits working to establish a co-op grocery store in the Near East Side neighborhood. This community-owned store will focus on high-quality local food and reinvest profits into our neighborhood.

What is a Food Co-op?

A food co-op is a community-owned grocery store, independent from corporate chains. Food co-ops prioritize serving their local community by providing affordable, high-quality local food. They support local farmers and businesses and are committed to giving back to the community.  Anyone can shop at a food co-op, and those who choose to become owners gain financial rewards and a say in the co-op's decisions through voting for the board of directors. Each co-op is unique, but all share the goal of ensuring everyone has access to great food and community support.

Our values.

Equity

We commit to fairness and justice in all our operations, ensuring that every member of the Near East Side has access to affordable, nutritious food without bias or barriers.

Community Empowerment

We empower our residents by actively involving them in decision-making processes, fostering a sense of ownership and pride within the co-op.

Sustainability

We pledge to uphold sustainable practices that protect our environment and ensure the long-term viability of our resources, serving current and future generations.

Collective Ownership

We believe in the strength of collective action and shared responsibility, ensuring that our co-op remains a community-driven effort.
